An Industry-Leading Digital Experience for the New York Racing Association (NYRA)

Project Overview

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) is one of the United States’ leading horse racing organizations. It operates premier racetracks in New York State and conducts some of the most prestigious racing events in the country, including the Belmont Stakes, the oldest leg of horse racing’s famed Triple Crown series. NYRA also operates one of the most successful online wagering platforms in the world, NYRA Bets, which empowers sports fans to handicap and place wagers on horse races around the world, using their own computers and mobile devices.

The NYRA team turned to Culture Foundry and our extensive experience designing, developing, and supporting major sports and entertainment websites when it needed to reconstruct its aging technology stack and transition NYRA’s digital properties to a more adaptable and user-friendly content management system (CMS). NYRA also sought our help to reinvent NYRA.com’s core design, user experience, and site content to improve customer engagement and search engine optimization (SEO).

Challenge

The NYRA team needed to unify and simplify its family of racetrack and event websites under a branded “umbrella” site, while creating space for each track and the Belmont Stakes to present its unique personality online. This would require a strategic retooling of the commingled sites’ information architecture to help site visitors quickly find relevant information without falling down data rabbit holes.

As background, racetrack websites need to seamlessly integrate massive data sets from a variety of software programs, such as customer relationship management (CRM), online wagering, pedigree registration, race entry information, video streaming, and ecommerce systems that sell event tickets and official merchandise. These third-party platform integrations are crucial to a racetrack’s daily operations, revenue generation, and guest experience.

NYRA needed a way to streamline all of these touchpoints into a cohesive and secure online portal that well represented its family of brands while making its full array of informational and transactional offerings portable, so customers could enjoy the NYRA experience whether in person or virtually.

Solution

We put forth a plan to help NYRA become a digital leader in the Thoroughbred horse racing industry, with an emphasis on the following strategies:

    • Lead in mobile: Design websites that adapt to any screen size, offering a consistent user experience from landing pages to conversion points.
    • Lead in online video: Transmit the in-person racing experience to virtual spaces for fans around the world following NYRA racing, leveraging NYRA’s extraordinary access to live-streamed and on-demand video content and real-time racing and wagering data.
    • Lead in customer engagement and user analytics: Cultivate new site visitors through a variety of digital touchpoints to ensure casual fans grow into loyal customers.
    • Lead in brand balance: Ensure each NYRA racetrack, along with the NYRA parent organization and the Belmont Stakes event site, has a strong and distinct digital identity, while ensuring the full portfolio of websites works together as a cohesive whole with a consistent design language.
    • Lead in content management: Manage all content through a centralized CMS that is easy to use and agile enough to support a variety of API integrations.
    • Lead in site stability through scalability: Build scalability into NYRA’s technology solution and its content strategy, allowing its network of websites to handle significant traffic increases on major race days.

Outcome

Our design and development team embraced the challenge by first pulling content from the individual NYRA racetrack and event websites into one parent domain, NYRA.com. From there, we created a design system based on color coding – each racetrack or event has a unique color assigned to it – to help users navigate the full site and distinguish content unique to each sub-brand. (Aqueduct Racetrack = Teal, Belmont Park = Green, Saratoga Race Course = Red, Belmont Stakes = Gold). Because NYRA racetracks conduct racing year-round and never overlap one another, we designed the NYRA.com homepage to rotate, so content from the track currently operating is always displayed first.

User-friendly navigation can be a challenge for racing websites, given the amount of current and archival information they hold. To address this, our team greatly streamlined the NYRA.com menu system, organizing the most sought-after content into logical buckets for NYRA’s principal audiences (horsemen, handicappers, journalists, casual fans, and tourists) to explore.

The site’s design system includes illustrative iconography that also serves as a wayfinding tool, pointing users to race entries and changes, live race streams and results, and horsemen’s information. Page designs also provide shortcuts to breaking news stories, handicapping advice, and monthly calendar information for visitors planning trips to the track. Promotional content from the NYRA Bets online wagering platform infuses the site, inviting visitors to sign up and grow their relationship with the brand.

While NYRA.com’s reimagined front-end design and UX are transformative, improvements to the site’s backend are equally impressive. Like NYRA Bets, NYRA.com has been transitioned into a decoupled CMS powered by Django. Site managers easily create and modify content through an intuitive front-end editing interface, while API-supplied racing and wagering information feeds into the backend of the site through a custom-built data aggregator we call Track Radar

This data – which arrives in the form of racing entries, race changes and scratches, horse pedigree information, real-time wagering odds and betting information, and live video feeds – is commingled and displayed through a custom-built dashboard offering site visitors everything they need to watch and wager on live horse racing virtually.

To ensure NYRA.com could handle significant traffic spikes on big race days, we overhauled its content delivery and hosting infrastructure, implementing a more robust and redundant solution. This upgrade included a scalable cloud architecture designed to handle high volumes of traffic, especially during events that drive peak visitation, such as the Belmont Stakes. Our team rigorously tests the system to guarantee its stability, ensuring NYRA.com remains fully operational during critical moments without any downtime or performance issues.
