There is a rhythm to this work. It’s a constant peal you don’t hear unless you are on the job site. The peal is sharp, and steady, and familiar. The peal obsesses. The peal frustrates. The peal despairs.

But despite its unpleasantness, despite its monotony, the sharp peal strikes into the world. It connects. It creates.

Obsession — The Hammer Retracts

Every project starts the same way. There’s a smell to it—like a new car. I’ve always called it, “new project smell”—a kickoff call, an empty new folder on your desktop, a quiet space that forms in your mind like a miracle. In that space you find obsession.

What happens next is closer to survival than employment. You take on someone else’s problem and you make it your own. You dream about it. Not metaphorically. You actually dream. You bolt awake with a thought about navigation, copy, page structure. Explorations of font, color, and texture carve new shapes into your abused pillow.

The hammer rises. The nail shrinks. You worry about missing. But some better part of yourself grips harder, raises higher, and acts.

Frustration — The Hammer Falls

At some point, you have to strike. This is when the peal first rings. The space in the mind fills with sound and fury.

The blank page is a lie. It looks empty, but it isn’t. It is dense with everything that could go wrong. It holds every bad version of itself. It holds every decision you’ve blown before. You have to hammer, and hammer, and hammer through it—not with inspiration, but with stubbornness. You hammer, and hammer, and hammer. Bad work becomes good work. The blank page is not filled with song, but substance.

But you are not finished. You must measure what you’ve made.

A team hired you because they cannot do what you do. That’s the arrangement, and it’s fair. But it means they evaluate your work with the only instruments they have. Imperfect instruments. They name what they love but cannot describe. They name what they hate but cannot describe. Your hammer falls, and falls, and falls, seeking to defy description and discover consensus. The blank page is not filled with song, but discord.

But you are not finished. There are committees.

One person with authority is a gift, even when they’re wrong. Sometimes especially when they’re wrong. But a room full of stakeholders is different entirely. A bold choice becomes a safe choice becomes a choice nobody hates—a choice nobody notices. The cube, pounded into a sphere, finds its corners again. The fight isn’t just lost, it is lost. The blank page is not filled with song, but process.

Despair — The Hammer Forges

In the end, you deliver. You are changed.

Some hours don’t make the invoice. Some victories only exist in the new internal space you carved. All of it is drowned by the peal. Not the song of some grand designer trumpeting his craft, but the sharp, constant peal of steel striking steel.

You archive the folder. The invoice goes out. The life of the project, if you’re lucky, gets compressed into an impressive case study. Maybe it earns new work.

For a brief moment, the peal ceases. And then comes the next horizon. A new brief. A new folder. A new space forms in your mind.

The hammer retracts. You strike.
