Project Overview
The Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA) is a leading nonprofit supporting individuals, families, clinicians, and researchers affected by Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease. The CMTA website is a lifeline: a place where newly diagnosed patients seek answers, families look for support, clinicians find the latest research, and donors support the pursuit of a cure.
As CMTA expanded its programs, information and reach, the website originally built years earlier could not keep up. The legacy platform could not match the scale of the growing volume of content, and for its users, essential information was becoming increasingly hard to find.
CMTA came to Culture Foundry with the goal of modernizing its digital presence, organizing and migrating its growing trove of content, and creating a flexible foundation to support its multiple audiences and the organization for years to come.
Challenge
CMTA serves a wide range of audiences, and each one needs fast access to clear, trustworthy information. But the inherited site structure and aging technical stack made that difficult. The site had accumulated hundreds of pages, and in places felt like an overstuffed file cabinet, with older and newer information mixed together haphazardly.
This made it difficult for their primary users to find critical resources:
- Patients and caregivers struggled to find clear answers during key moments of their medical journey.
- Clinicians and researchers had trouble navigating to scientific resources.
- Donors found the research narrative buried and unclear, hurting engagement and fund development.
The most heavily-used areas of the site, location-specific resources to help people find clinicians, Centers of Excellence, and support group branches near them, had essentially become unmaintainable. The inconsistent site structure also created SEO challenges, limiting discoverability.
CMTA’s website had simply outgrown its original life cycle. CMTA needed a modern digital foundation built for its expanding reach and the urgency of its work.
Solution
Through stakeholder workshops, analytics analysis, a full technical audit, and a strategic review of CMTA’s content ecosystem, Culture Foundry went beyond identifying the symptoms. We uncovered the core problem: the site needed more than new templates. It needed a structural overhaul that prioritized clarity, accessibility, flexibility and, above all, utility.
We repositioned the site around three strategic pillars: clear information pathways, sustainable technical architecture, and personalized user support.

Each audience segment comes to the site for different reasons, so the homepage now adapts to support the wide range of users CMTA serves.
Users can filter by:
- Who they are (patient, caregiver, clinician, researcher, donor)
- The subtype of CMT they want to know more about
- Location (to find clinicians, branches, and Centers of Excellence)
This puts the right information in front of the right people, eliminating frustration and creating immediate clarity.
Creating a Scalable Component System
To give CMTA full control and prevent future bottlenecks, we built a reusable component library powered by Gutenberg and Culture Foundry’s Alloy system.
This empowers CMTA’s team to:
- Build and update pages quickly
- Maintain brand consistency
- Scale content quickly during research breakthroughs or fundraising seasons
- Avoid the plugin bloat and technical debt that can slow a site
The site now operates with the flexibility CMTA needs to manage content efficiently and support new initiatives.
Outcome
The new cmtausa.org now reflects the clarity, compassion, and credibility of CMTA’s mission. It performs and communicates better, empowering the organization to move faster.
Three months after launch, CMTA saw measurable improvements across every key metric, from Core Web Vitals to Lighthouse Best Practice scores:
- Accessibility scores surged to an impressive 92–93%
- Mobile and desktop performance scores improved across the board
- Google’s Lighthouse Best Practices score rose to a perfect 100
- The site’s Google Lighthouse SEO score rose seven points, from 85 to 92, as search engines found it easier to crawl the cleaner, more efficient, and more authoritative site
Together, these improvements create a foundation of trust for an audience that relies on CMTA’s essential resources, and strengthens CMTA’s ability to serve as the leading organization advancing research and patient advocacy for CMT.
